Our Client Stories

The Winthrop Group, Inc. came to life 30 years ago when five Harvard-educated historians made a bold choice - they decided they could build a new bridge, one that would enable decision-makers in contemporary corporations to utilize and benefit from history-informed thinking and evaluation. This is the origin of Winthrop's tag line, "Capturing experience and putting it to work."

In the same year as Winthrop's founding, company Director George D. Smith and his colleague Laurence Steadman wrote the seminal article published by Harvard Business Review, The Present Value of Corporate History. Early and innovative work with AT&T and Alcoa followed and attracted an impressive list of clients, giving us the opportunity to produce insightful case studies, analyses of the processes and organizational behaviors, litigation support, and scholarly books. Edgerly & Associates’ thriving archives management and consulting practice, became the Archival Services Division of Winthrop in 1989. Their nationwide and diverse range of clients, developed starting in 1979, was unmatched then and remains so today.

Winthrop has continued to work with an unrivaled list of public corporations, non-profit organizations, family-owned companies, NGO’s and private families and individuals. While our firm’s services have continued to grow, the foundation continues to be a commitment to the value of inquiry and research, knowledge and experience, legacy and innovative thinking. In celebration of 30 years of success, and as we launch into our 4th decade, we wish to honor and thank all of Winthrop’s clients and professionals by highlighting a few projects that represent the diversity of those with whom we have had the pleasure to work. We hope you enjoy reading about them.
