LITIGATION SUPPORT

Documentary Research
Winthrop was hired by a Fortune 100 to undertake and manage a comprehensive documentation and research project which involved extensive identification, translation, and use of archival resources in the United States and Germany. For nearly three years Winthrop’s European representative coordinated the work of carefully selected historians and archivists in Germany with those of a senior Winthrop consultant who oversaw similar work in the US. Each of the thousands of relevant documents was copied and logged into a database thereby ensuring that attorneys would be able to refer to them at any time.

Subsequently, white papers summarizing various aspects of the findings were prepared and along with copies of the documentation were utilized successfully in settlement negotiations. Because of the public interest in the resulting collection of materials, and because it had been so carefully arranged and cataloged, the client took the unusual step of donating them to a repository where they now are publicly accessible. The client avoided what would have been an extremely difficult legal action, negotiated a modest settlement, and won praise for the thoroughness of the work and the forthrightness of its actions.
