Citigroup

Citigroup traces its roots to the founding of the City Bank of New York in 1812. Since that time, the bank has financed a broad range of enterprises and initiatives from steamships and the Marshall Plan to micro-businesses in the developing world.

Winthrop Group began working with Citigroup to establish an archives in 2002. The team collected records from the company historian and other internal sources, including minute books from 1812 on, and created a database with more than 11,000 entries.

Now known as the Heritage Collection, the archives operates as part of Citi’s Center for Culture, which also encompasses a research and analysis group and the Fine Art Department. Providing outreach to and support for internal clients, the Winthrop archivists conduct historical fact-checking and provide archival resources for Citi’s global communications efforts and work to develop Citi’s archival resources. The Fine Art staff encourages use of the art collection for display and marketing, and research and analysis services are supplied for larger projects such as briefing books and internal websites.

Citibank has celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2012, the 30th anniversary year of Winthrop’s founding. Citi’s bicentennial, supported by a team (both Winthrop and internal) has promoted and proven the value of history within the company. Among the important projects is a 200th anniversary coffee table book, highly illustrated with photos and stories from the Heritage Collection. Other efforts have included internal tours and oral history videos of retired executives and Citi’s loan of materials to the Museum of the City of New York for its recent “Capital of Capital” exhibit.
